On the basis of the
creation and supposed launch of the prototype of an artefact -a commodity-
intented to achieve a kind of synthesis between pleasure and learning,
Connie Mendoza develops, by means of the appropiation of some of the more
symptomatic mechanisms of the consumer society, a whole representational
apparatus designed to expose to view the essence behind the machinery
of desire from a totally sophisticated and commercialized perspective.
The strategies of a false freedom and a pretended approach to a kind of
elitist intelletualizing accessible to the spectator/user are presented
as the two axes around which her reflection and her proposal of analysis
revolve. Formalized as an expositor of prototypes, exposed as a catalyser
of desires and as a model of social aspirations and of class, and elaborated
as a simple manipulation of contents and sounds, the artist’s work
proposes a focus on certain of the mechanisms which, from the realms of
aesthetics and consumption, subtly influence our conception of desire.
